(SaMo)Shel’ing Out a Lot of Love

On the second Saturday of every month, the Barristers visit the Santa Monica Shelter (map), where we cook together in an industrial kitchen to bring a delicious meal to as many as 60 residents.  Check out the pictures of past visits below, and join us on Saturday, September 12 (tomorrow) at 3 p.m., when we get a Back to School-themed menu:

Thank You for a Beautiful and Blessed Year | by Doron Eghbali, Barristers President

Doron EghbaliThis is my last piece in Bar Brief as the President of the BHBA Barristers. Accordingly, it is important to reflect on the successful and jovial year we have had as Barristers and express our deepest gratitude to our beloved Barristers BOG members for their profound dedication and sacrifice.

Even though it is rather impossible to bestow individual accolades on more than 20 committees and many MCLEs we spearheaded, here is a summary of our notable activities this past year.

Roxbury Park – Every first Saturday of the month William S. Wenzel, our wonderful President-Elect, along with ebullient Danielle Grabois, Co-Chaired this event to provide free legal services.

Samoshel – Every second Saturday of the month, our chef extraordinaire, LeRoy Williams, joined by amiable past President of Barristers, Jeanine Percival Wright, and superb Jeremiah Livesay prepared eclectic food and served around 60 homeless people at the Santa Monica Shelter.

Vintage Bouquet – Like previous years, our indomitable Co-Chairs, Dira Imam and Danielle Grabois, spearheaded another electrifying Vintage Bouquet along with our invaluable Elizabeth Peterson, Jeremiah Livesay, Eseigbe Omofoma, Lauren Gabbaian and Yan Goldshteyn. Special thanks to Leigh Leshner, John Grimball and Nicholas Francescon for their efforts during past years.

Pro Bono Committee – On a Saturday, during Law Week at L.A. Law Library, Autumn Ronda along with Elizabeth Peterson, Rachel Balchum, and Dira Imam, provided free legal advice to more than 100 people. In addition, with the diligence of Jack McMorrow and other members of this great Committee, we succeeded in continuing to inform the public of noble pro bono activities in our neighborhoods through our meticulously prepared Pro Bono Newsletters.

Power Lunch – Nearly every month Yan Goldshteyn and Brian Schaller planned a “Power Lawyer” lunch with legal titans for an intimate roundtable discussion.

Committee for the Arts – Anastasia Alen and Dira Imam brought to fruition an ethereal evening of memorable art, music and food at the former House of Blues.

Tolerance Through Education – Liana Yoon and Eseigbe Omofoma taught elementary school children the meaning of love, respect and tolerance through educational activities.

Meet the Judges – Megan Peitzke deftly assembled eight judges and two commissionaires for a private and rare evening at the Santa Monica Courthouse.

Brunch for Eight – Ariadne Giannis executed four separate Brunch for Eight programs with UCLA, USC, Loyola and Whittier law schools.

Mentorship Committee – Our tireless Zev Shechtman, Autumn Ronda and Diana Ovsepian sought to continue matching qualified mentors with receptive mentees.

Social Media Committee – Special thanks to Lauren Gabbaian for her expertise in supervising our Social Media.

Happy Hour – David Paletz, our convivial Chair, ensured every Thursday of the month that we all had a classy place to go to for professional networking.

Join me in my heartfelt thanks of our beloved and blessed BOG.

Love, Bonhomie and Professionalism | By Doron Eghbali, Barristers President

Doron EghbaliThe salient characteristics of the Beverly Hills Bar Association (BHBA) Barristers Board of Governors (BOG) are the bonhomie, love and professionalism it permeates and promotes among its members. These indispensable characteristics suffuse the 20 committees and projects the BHBA BOG have embarked upon.

Vintage Bouquet

Given these noble attributes, the BHBA Barristers’ BOG continued the glamorous Annual Vintage Bouquet event this year on April 26, 2015 with exquisite food and wine. Special thanks to our fastidious Co-Chair’s Dira Imam and Danielle Grabois whose dedication, along with the invaluable devotion of our Barristers’ BOG members Eseigbe A Omofoma, Lauren Gabbaian, Elizabeth Hall Peterson and Jeremiah Livesay, made this event possible. Also it is incumbent upon us to thank our previous Chair of Vintage Bouquet, Leigh Leshner and BOG members Nick Francescon and John Grimball for the past years’ successes.

Meet the Judges

Furthermore, thanks to our indispensable Megan Peitzke and the BHBA Barristers “Meet the Judges of the West District” was held on May 14, 2015 at the Santa Monica Courthouse. Eight judges and two commissioners graciously shared with participants the insight into many aspects of trial practice from ethics to civil discovery to trial work. It was a rare and informal meeting that participants undoubtedly relished.

Brunch for Eight

Again, we had the pleasure of hosting a select group of law students from Whittier Law School on April 12, 2015 at the BHBA, which was our fourth Brunch for Eight event in a month. Our wonderful Ariadne Giannis, the Chair of the Section, successfully arranged it.

Roxbury Park and Samoshel

On the first Saturday of the month in April and May, our efficient President-Elect William Wenzel and invaluable Co-Chair Danielle Grabois provided the public with free legal advice in a loving and welcoming ambience, along with other volunteers.

The second Saturday in April and May, our very own chef extraordinaire Leroy Williams, Jeremiah Livesay and other great volunteers, prepared delicious and eclectic food and served nearly 60 homeless people at the Santa Monica Shelter.

MCLE and Power Lunch

Our dedicated Barristers executed at least six ‘nuts and bolts’ type of MCLEs in the past two months on legal topics as diverse as Immigration, Real Estate, Labor and Employment, Law Practice Management, and Entertainment.

Thanks to Yan Goldshteyn, President-Elect for 2016-2017, and formidable Co-Chair, Brian Schaller, “Power” attorneys in entertainment law continued to share the keys to their success with the participants.

Happy Hour

Like previous months, David Paletz put on another Happy Hour with panache and class. Our Happy Hours are usually the third Thursday of the month at the Hotel Sixty in Beverly Hills.

You are welcome to become a part of us. We will embrace you with love and make you feel welcome.

An Invitation to Success | By Doron Eghbali, Barristers President

Doron EghbaliThe Barristers Board of Governors (BOG) consists of successful and kind-hearted Barristers whose noble objective is to espouse and implement the betterment of our legal community and the community at large. We meet every second Wednesday of the month at 6:30 p.m. at the Beverly Hills Bar Association (BHBA). As a Barrister (i.e., younger attorney), you are welcome to attend the open part of the BOG meeting.

Invitation to BOG Meetings

We would love for you, as a diligent young lawyer, to intelligently appreciate what you are missing to further thrive personally and professionally. At the BOG meetings, we will embrace you as an honored guest and help you become acquainted with a few of our 20+ sections and committees which the Barristers run. Topics of discussion include:

  • Learning how to Manage a Potential Client while Helping the Community: Become involved in our Roxbury Park Legal Clinic. Barristers meet every first Saturday of the month from 10:00 a.m. – noon to provide free general legal services to the community at large. Thanks to our invaluable President-Elect Wil S. Wenzel, and amiable Danielle Grabois, the Roxbury Clinic served at least 16 people with several lawyer volunteers, during January of 2015.
  • Feeding the Homeless: Join our SaMoShel Committee. Our selfless Barristers, under tutelage of our own chef extraordinaire LeRoy Williams and selfless past president Jeanine Percival Wright, meet every second Saturday of the month at Santa Monica Shelter from 3:00 – 5:00 p.m. to cook delicious food and feed at least 60 homeless people. This is a sampling of our January 2015 menu:

Mama’s Herb Roasted Chicken
Uncle Lee’s Garlic Mashed Potatoes
Grandma’s String Bean Casserole
Cousin Tommy’s Tasty Salad
Aunt Millie’s Peach Crisp

  • Attending “Power Lunch” Series: You should seriously consider these revived series in which Barristers get a chance for a candid discussion with a “Power” lawyer in an informal setting to receive honest and practical answers for further professional career advancement. These series are organized by our very own superb Co-Chairs, Brian Schaller and Yan Goldshteyn, our Treasurer.
  • Having Fun, Food and Wine with our Vintage Bouquet Committee: Contemplate becoming involved with our Vintage Bouquet, run by our own able and affable Co-Chairs, Danielle Grabois and Nadira Imam.
  • Being a Mentee of and a Mentor to a Younger Lawyer: You may apply online at http://www.bhba.org/mentorship. Special thanks to our formidable past President, Autumn Ronda and invaluable Zev Shechtman, as Co-Chairs of the Mentorship Committee.

This list is just a small fraction of what our dedicated Barristers accomplish. Indeed, for instance, under the praiseworthy chairmanship of Autumn Ronda and Rachel Balchum, we had a very successful Grant-a-Wish drive in which we collectively fulfilled holiday wishes of thirty-nine boys ages 11-18.

If you would like to be part of our fun, fulfilling and educational committees, you should step forward and become involved. Hope to see you soon.

Barristers Can Facilitate Career Enhancement | By Doron Eghbali, Barristers President

Doron EghbaliMy friends and colleagues often ask me how their involvement in the Beverly Hills Bar Association’s Barristers could help them with their career. My response to them is often simple: become sincerely involved and you will appreciate the tangible and intangible benefits.

In fact, given more than 20 projects and programs that our Barristers’ section offers members and non-members alike, any serious and sincere Barrister would find a program to get involved with or even spearhead, of course with our help and support.

Such Barristers’ programs not only help the community, but also reward those dedicated Barristers who spend their weekends or evenings planning and executing such programs with credibility in the eyes of their employers and clients. This credibility often translates into new and lucrative attorney-client relationships.

Indeed, impeccable reputation and integrity are sine qua non for a successful legal career. Community involvement on the level that Barristers have accomplished undoubtedly helps those volunteers with name recognition.

For instance, on October 25, 2014, Rachel Balchum and Elizabeth Peterson diligently and deftly planned and executed a legal clinic involving more than 30 volunteer Barristers serving more than 100 people as part of L.A. Law Library Pro Bono week.

Kudos to Rachel and Elizabeth who undertook this colossal endeavor under the able aegis of Barristers Immediate Past President Autumn Ronda. In addition, on November 8, 2014, Barristers presented “What Every Tenant Needs to Know,” a substantive two-hour free Landlord-Tenant seminar to the public, at Roxbury Park.

The other examples of Barristers’ constant involvement in the community would be our monthly Roxbury Park Free Legal Clinic and Samoshel. Every first Saturday of the month our volunteers, run by our able Barristers’ President-Elect William S. Wenzel, provide free legal advice to the public.

Every second Saturday of the month, at Santa Monica Shelter, our dedicated Barristers’ volunteers cook and feed around 60 homeless people under the tutelage of our own chef extraordinaire, LeRoy Williams. Another project involved a toy drive in December, before the New Year, to help the greater Los Angeles’ impoverished children.

Legal Community

In addition to community involvement, Barristers are also involved in the legal community by planning and executing a few substantive MCLEs a month, geared mostly toward the needs of the younger attorneys. Our revived “Lunch with…” Power Lunch Series, run by our own Brian Schaller and Yan Goldshteyn, brings together illustrious attorneys in different practice areas with a small group of younger attorneys for an informal and candid round table discussion.

Career Enhancement

Given more than 20 or so events and programs the Barristers spearhead, any member of this proud and humble community should feel rewarded. Hence, when Barristers state these accomplishments on their resumes, LinkedIn, Avvo, Twitter, or Facebook pages, clients and employers take notice.

Clients know that such dedicated lawyers will steadfastly champion their rights, while employers realize that such competent and accomplished lawyers are invaluable assets to their law firms.

SaMoShelling Out the Good Stuff

At the September installment of SaMoShel, the Barristers rang in the start of football season with wings and nachos!

The Barristers always meet on the second Tuesday of the month at OPCC SaMoShel (Santa Monica Shelter) to cook and serve a meal to as many as 60 of Santa Monica’s homeless population.  Join us at our next meeting on Oct. 11, from 3-5 p.m.

Supercharged SaMoShel

We had a great turnout at our last SaMoShel event, and everyone was chopping, grilling, scooping SOMETHING to perfection.  The menu was Carribean themed, and everyone we served was so greatful we even got some applause!  Check out pictures from the event below, and remember: the next SaMoShel will be this weekend on August 9!

Batter Up!

Barristers from the Beverly Hills and Santa Monica Bar Associations went head to head last Saturday in Santa Monica to play an epic game of softball.  Sadly, the home team won in the last inning, with a final score of 7-6, but the weather was great, the game was a blast, and both sides came together for a pizza party afterward.  Thanks to Jonathan Dennis for organizing, and stay tuned for details about a rematch later this year!

BHBA Barristers Free Legal Clinic! Sat, June 7th, 10am-Noon!

The Barristers are hosting their Monthly Free Legal Clinic this Saturday, June 7th, 2014 at La Cienega Park in Beverly Hills. This is a fun opportunity to serve the community and meet your BHBA colleagues!
Barrister Leroy Williams will be leading our clinic. Let's get a good number of volunteers there to help Leroy help our community!
As always, we operate as a question and answer clinic. People come with a variety of questions and our volunteer attorneys do their best to provide basic answers.
The clinic begins at 10 am and finishes at about 12 noon, depending on the number of people who attend. If you are a new volunteer, come and check us out! We don't require a commitment to attend any particular number of sessions and we will pair you with an experienced volunteer attorney who will show you the ropes.
Also, remember that next month on Saturday, July 12, the clinic will again return to Roxbury Park in Beverly Hills! We changed the date due to the 4th of July holiday but are moving back to our previous and now, newly remodeled location!
If you are interested in volunteering or have any questions please feel free to contact co-chairs Brian Smith (bsmith493@sbcglobal.net), Anton Labrentz (anton@MrDuiLa.com) or Wil Wenzel (wsw@wswlegal.com).
The Barristers Monthly Free Legal Clinic is a community service program of the Beverly Hills Bar Association, 9420 Wilshire Blvd, 2nd Floor, Beverly Hills, CA 90212.
