It gives me great pleasure to announce that the Barristers have formed a new committee dedicated to mentorship. As young lawyers are entering the profession and facing challenges, many are in need of sound advice. The Beverly Hills Bar Association is cognizant of that need and wants to build lasting relationships that help newly admitted lawyers reach their full potential.

As with most relationships, it’s important for both participants to find common interests and set ground rules. At the onset, mentors should set clear expectations of their mentees. A mentor’s responsibility is to listen and provide constructive feedback. Mentees must prove to be responsible, knowledgeable, interested in the respective field of law, and willing to appropriately challenge their capabilities. Secondly, mentors need to be sensitive to potential culture and gender issues. Gender and cultural differences can sometimes be seen as obstacles to effective communication. However, by recognizing diversity and respecting individual differences, a meaningful and fulfilling relationship could be cultivated.

Next, preparation is vital. The mentee needs to be clear about the topic of interest and have an agenda that reflects the goals or challenges to be addressed. Finally, mentees should be mindful of the mentor’s time and availability. In order to be respectful of a mentor’s time, it would be prudent to schedule meetings in advance and prepare a list of topics to discuss. I believe that such skills and preparation would bode well for a successful mentorship program.

Speaking from personal experience, the Beverly Hills Bar Association is a wonderful place for networking and professional development. We try to cater to all of our membership and provide a welcoming environment for camaraderie and friendships. At the organization, you are not referred to by a number, but by name. We feel that it is important to serve our membership to no lesser degree that we serve the community or advance the profession.

Doron EghbaliThe Barristers Board of Governors (BOG) consists of successful and kind-hearted Barristers whose noble objective is to espouse and implement the betterment of our legal community and the community at large. We meet every second Wednesday of the month at 6:30 p.m. at the Beverly Hills Bar Association (BHBA). As a Barrister (i.e., younger attorney), you are welcome to attend the open part of the BOG meeting.

We would love for you, as a diligent young lawyer, to intelligently appreciate what you are missing to further thrive personally and professionally. At the BOG meetings, we will embrace you as an honored guest and help you become acquainted with a few of our 20+ sections and committees which the Barristers run. Topics of discussion include:

  • Learning how to Manage a Potential Client while Helping the Community: Become involved in our Roxbury Park Legal Clinic. Barristers meet every first Saturday of the month from 10:00 a.m. – noon to provide free general legal services to the community at large. Thanks to our invaluable President-Elect Wil S. Wenzel, and amiable Danielle Grabois, the Roxbury Clinic served at least 16 people with several lawyer volunteers, during January of 2015.
  • Feeding the Homeless: Join our SaMoShel Committee. Our selfless Barristers, under tutelage of our own chef extraordinaire LeRoy Williams and selfless past president Jeanine Percival Wright, meet every second Saturday of the month at Santa Monica Shelter from 3:00 – 5:00 p.m. to cook delicious food and feed at least 60 homeless people. This is a sampling of our January 2015 menu:

  • Attending “Power Lunch” Series: You should seriously consider these revived series in which Barristers get a chance for a candid discussion with a “Power” lawyer in an informal setting to receive honest and practical answers for further professional career advancement. These series are organized by our very own superb Co-Chairs, Brian Schaller and Yan Goldshteyn, our Treasurer.
  • Having Fun, Food and Wine with our Vintage Bouquet Committee: Contemplate becoming involved with our Vintage Bouquet, run by our own able and affable Co-Chairs, Danielle Grabois and Nadira Imam.
  • Being a Mentee of and a Mentor to a Younger Lawyer: You may apply online at http://www.bhba.org/mentorship. Special thanks to our formidable past President, Autumn Ronda and invaluable Zev Shechtman, as Co-Chairs of the Mentorship Committee.

This list is just a small fraction of what our dedicated Barristers accomplish. Indeed, for instance, under the praiseworthy chairmanship of Autumn Ronda and Rachel Balchum, we had a very successful Grant-a-Wish drive in which we collectively fulfilled holiday wishes of thirty-nine boys ages 11-18.

Who Needs a Mentor? | by Autumn Ronda, Barristers President

Autumn-Ronda-2013Everyone! The importance of mentorship cannot be understated. Oftentimes it can mean the difference between a budding professional’s determination to succeed, and their tangible success. Though a mentor relationship can exist in many forms, it always guides the mentee to the most clear and advantageous path to attaining their goals and the mentor will find the experience equally enriching.

I am fortunate to have maintained mentorship relationships with both attorneys and non-legal professionals alike. Though I am glad to have mentors within my firm, having mentors outside of one’s organization is imperative. It is often these individuals who can provide the most impartial view of a problem or obstacle. Sometimes I ask my mentors to comment on the strategy I’ve selected for a particular client, edit something I’ve drafted, or simply brainstorm with me. Other times, I’m looking for advice on the “big picture.” Regardless of the scale of my request, their experienced opinions and helpful reassurances help me to achieve my short and long-term goals.

This all seems very one-sided, right? It seems impossible for one to reciprocate the generosity of someone who is willing to invest so much of themselves in other individuals, but the answer is simple; you can’t repay them, so you must pay it forward instead. Personally, I have mentored at least ten individuals in a meaningful way, so I know the feeling of gratification and accomplishment, which a mentor feels when their mentee succeeds, is immeasurable.

How can you find yourself in a mentor relationship like the ones I described above, you ask? To facilitate meaningful mentoring relationships among BHBA members, my Co-Chair, Zev Shechtman and I have formed the new Barristers Mentorship Committee. Participants will submit detailed applications and the program administrators will make appropriate and thoughtful matches. Student members will be matched with Barristers as mentors. Barristers will be matched with more experienced members as Mentors. Mentor/Mentee matches will design their own guidelines for their relationship and a social event will be held in the spring to “kick-off” the Mentorship Program.
